Yellow Track is the primary historical past of the emergence of Chinese language well-liked tune and concrete media tradition in early-twentieth-century China. Andrew F. Jones makes a speciality of the affinities between "yelloworpornographic" tuneas critics derisively referred to the "decadent" fusion of American jazz, Hollywood movie tune, and Chinese language people bureaucracyand the anticolonial mass tune that challenged its business and ideological dominance. Jones radically revises earlier understandings of race, politics, pop culture, and era within the making of recent Chinese language tradition. The non-public {and professional} histories of 3 musicians are central to Jones's discussions of transferring gender roles, magnificence inequality, the politics of nationwide salvation, and rising media applied sciences: the American jazz musician Greenback Clayton; Li Jinhui, the author of "yellow tune"; and leftist Nie Er, a former pupil of Lis whose musical idiom grew out of virulent opposition to this Sinified jazz. As he analyzes world media cultures within the postcolonial international, Jones avoids the parochialism of media research within the West. He teaches us to listen to no longer best the American affect on Chinese language well-liked tune however the Chinese language affect on American tune as neatly; in so doing, he illuminates the techniques wherein each cultures had been implicated within the unfolding of colonial modernity within the 20th century.
